Absolute and relative humidity - the phenomenon of dry heating air


Why is it too dry indoors, especially during the season when it tends to be rather damp and cold?


To understand this, we must first distinguish between absolute and relative humidity. Absolute humidity indicates the actual content of water in the air.
However, the relative humidity is decisive for the growth of bacteria and germs, the drying out of mucous membranes as well as for dust binding and electrostatic charging. It indicates the degree of saturation of the air with moisture as a percentage, i.e. it describes the ratio of the amount of moisture currently present in the air to the maximum amount of moisture that can be absorbed by the air. Warm air can absorb much more moisture than cold air!


The result: on a frosty, foggy winter day at -8°C, the air has a relative humidity of 100%. The heating heats the air to 20°C, whereby the amount of moisture in the air does not increase. At 20°C, however, the air could absorb almost eight times the amount of moisture - the relative humidity is thus only 12% and is thus much too dry!

That’s why we stay healthy.


A relative humidity of between 40 and 60% provides optimal working conditions for our natural protective barriers. Our mucous membranes in the nose and mouth protect us from the penetration of harmful foreign substances, bacteria and viruses.


At lower humidity levels, our mucous membranes dry out and the protective mechanism only works to a limited extent.


Fortunately, viruses do not feel quite so comfortable in our comfort zone. At a humidity of 40-60%, fewer particles are in the air or "clump together" into larger units. These, in turn, sink to the floor more quickly and thus reduce the risk of direct droplet infection via the room air.


Once the virus particles have reached the floor or surfaces, studies show that viruses are less stable at a humidity of 40-60% and thus become inactive more quickly. This shortened survival time leads to a further reduction in the risk of indirect smear infection.

The skin is the largest sensory organ in the human body. It is therefore easy to understand why people with skin complaints such as irritation or itching quickly feel uncomfortable. These complaints are significantly lower under humidified conditions in the comfort range 40-60% than under non-humidified conditions. Below 30% relative humidity, the skin's hydration status has been shown to decrease.


Our eyes also appreciate a humidity of 40-60%. Low relative humidity leads to a significant increase in eyelid blink frequency and an increase in tear evaporation rate.


The results of another study of the relationship between relative humidity and stress, physical activity and sleep quality indicate that optimal conditions exist at around 45% RH.

Most steam humidifiers are heated with electrical energy, either with immersion electrodes or with resistive heating elements.


Our humidifiers No. One and No. Two on the right wall are e.g. electrode humidifiers, these are suitable for "normal tap water". This always contains a certain amount of dissolved minerals and salts and is therefore more or less conductive. An alternating voltage is applied to the electrodes immersed in the water. This sets the electrons in the water in motion - and this in turn generates frictional heat, which heats up the water and finally causes it to evaporate. Electrode humidifiers are relatively inexpensive in terms of initial investment, very robust in operation and can be used for many applications.


The third unit on the right wall, on the other hand, is an example of a heater type humidifier, here our FlexLine Plus with stainless steel steam cylinder. It works like an immersion heater or kettle at home, one or more electric heating coils heat up the water. Heater type humidifiers are somewhat more expensive, but they can be controlled more precisely and allow extremely low-maintenance operation when using treated feed water. Thus, heater type humidifiers are recommended mainly for process-critical applications in laboratories and on test benches, as well as generally for particularly high continuous stress in 24/7 operation.


While the described units work practically without pressure, there are also humidification systems with pressurised steam. In this case, compressed steam is generated in a central system and injected into the ventilation system in a controlled manner through motor-controlled valves. Such systems are mainly used when a pressurised steam system is needed anyway for other applications, such as heating, sterilisation or as process steam. In such cases, the additional use for humidification is often the simplest and cheapest option, especially if there is a high demand for humidification.

Spray nozzle systems


In the field of adiabatic humidification, low-pressure and high-pressure atomisation systems are dominantly established. On our left-hand exhibition wall you will find our LPS low-pressure atomisation system combined with the WaterLine ROC reverse osmosis water treatment system.


These Adiabatic systems use a pump to force demineralized water through fine nozzles creating a dense aerosol mist. These tiny droplets have a large surface in relation to their volume. They evaporate very quickly in the air flow in the shortest humidification distance, thanks to our extremely efficient swirl elements, the Vortex modules, which can be easily seen in our exhibited duct segment in the middle of our booth.


The low electrical energy consumption of the adiabatic systems is impressive. More than 100 kg/h humidification capacity can be realised with an electrical load of less than 1 kW. However, physics cannot be outwitted here either: the energy required for evaporation is taken in the form of heat from the air flow. This adiabatic effect of evaporative "cold" is familiar to anyone who has stood in the wind with wet skin after swimming at the beach.


Accordingly, HVAC- planning must always take into account that adiabatic humidification also causes cooling at the same time, which may have to be compensated for by more preheating or heat recovery.
Adiabatic systems are particularly interesting if they are not only used for humidification in winter, but also for exhaust air cooling in summer by means of heat exchangers.

In order to understand the significance of relative humidity for the human organism, it is already sufficient to realise that the eyes, for example, are permanently covered with a lacrimal film as protection against dust and other contaminants. The mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and throat serve to humidify the breathing air to 100% before it reaches the lungs.


The drier the air, the more the mucous membranes are stressed because they have to release more moisture. This results in the feeling of dry, chapped lips or burning eyes that you may already have experienced yourself.


However, too dry indoor air is not only unpleasant for the moment, it also significantly increases the probability of infectious diseases. Only from a humidity of 35 to 40 % or more, these negative effects can be largely eliminated. Since temperature and humidity fluctuations can occur at any time in everyday live, e.g. because someone simply opens a window or a door, a minimum air humidity of 40% is recommended from a health point of view.
